The Adventure of a Lifetime

If you don't watch tennis, you missed something amazing this weekend.

Andre Agassi played his final professional match, at the US Open. He knew this would be his last tournament. He'd been telling fans and the press for months. He's 36 years old, ancient for a professional tennis player. His back is giving out on him, but he loves the sport and the New York crowd, he had to make it to one more Open.

Last week, he played one of the most magical matches I've ever seen--finally winning in five sets while he was visibly hurting. Wowing the crowd until after one o'clock in the morning. It was a career defining moment. Then he had to come out Sunday to play again, and his body just couldn't take it. He lost to an unranked player in four sets, but to everyone watching he was a winner--The Ultimate Winner--in every point, because he got himself to the court and gave the crowd what they'd paid for one last time. Afterwards, tearfully, he talked about how much the fans and the sport had given him. How they'd given him the adventure of a lifetime.

You have to undertand that Agassi is probably the most important American player in modern tennis history. I can't image how many kids have grown up learning to play because they wanted to be like him--my son included. He's given us twenty years of giving everything he had to the sport (at least, since his comeback in the late nineties, when he didication and determination came sharply into focus). But all he could see at the end of his career was how much everyone had given him. How what defined him wasn't how many times he'd won or lost matches, but how many fans, peers, and press were on their feet cheering when he struck his last ball.

The thought for the day...how much do we get back from the people and places that are most important in our lives? How grateful could we feel if we took the time to reflect on that every day? How much more amazing could our the journey be, if we could step outside of ourselves and our goals more often, to be humbled by the impact we're making in the world around us?

You, my online friends, are such a part of what makes my writing career worthwhile, I didn't want to miss the chance to share that. One week to go on this deadline, and coming out here is one of the few parts of my day that makes me smile. You remind me why I'm working so hard to make this story the best it can be. You're one of my adventures of a lifetime ;O)

Okay, enough with the mushy tennis fanatic stuff!!

We need another RWA conference prize--how 'bout oodles of Harlequin books (many of them signed, including Debbie Macomber's ;O), and one of the nifty bags they gave away to attendies???

To secure your chance to win, leave a comment between now and next Tuesday.

And we need pics of the two additional prizes from last weekend's "what's wrong with the TPR cover" scavenger hunt!!

Don''t ask me who gets what (the goodies are already boxed up), but Sandra and Jennifer each get one of these lovelies I found as I was cleaning out the prize closet.

Carol was the first to comment about the mistake in the hair color, so she gets the great XOXO bag!!

You never know when we'll have another scavenger hunt, so check in as often as you can ;O)

I'll be posting a new website prize later this week, as well as the winner of the last one. I'll let everyone out here know out here when it's done. The newsletter's probably going to have to wait until after this book goes in, though...gotta focus...gotta make Bailey and Derrick's story great!!

Congrats to all the blog winners. All the prizes are going out today or tomorrow, so let us know when you get them later in the week!!! That includes the last two giveaways, too. My "shipping department" is finally back in town and working hard ;O)

Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend!!

Congratulations winners! WTG Carol! *wink* The new prize is fabu. Hope to win. I find the story of Agassi sad. And, did you hear about Steve Irwin the croc. hunter? Tragic.
To answer your question, it is astounding the impact we get from people and places that are important to us. And I am grateful and do reflect on this every day! You're a great woman, Anna. It was very touching what you wrote.
My weekend was fun. Hope you had a good one too. :-)

    Anna,

Thank you for the prize. Your purses are always so cute. I caught Andre Agassi's last game and speech as well. What a great sportsman. He truly showed dedication and hard work. I played tennis when I was in high school and college, and he was one of my heroes. He has such spirit and personality.
I also read about Steve Irwin and was upset by the news. I've always thought he was an exceptional man as well. His work with animals and conservation were wonderful. What a sad event.

I was so totally shocked about Steve Irwin. What a freak way to go. But it was some relief to hear one of his close friends who'd been on the dive with him say that he was happy at the moment it happened, living the life he loved and doing what he loved doing. It's just so sad to lose someone who's given so much, and to think of what might have come.

Buterflie, thanks for letting me know you enjoyed TPR. It such an emotional book--but hopefully an uplifting one once you're done ;O)

Mel, sniff sniff. You're a sweetheart!!

Ooh, what a great looking prize. Count me in.

Yes, two very touching stories. I feel for Steve's family - but yes he was doing what he loved.

As for Agassi, I saw part of the last game/set or whaterver you call it and did see reply of his speech. I enjoyed watching him play. And it was so touching for him to thank his fans.

Did ya'll hear the part of Agassi's post-game interview where he said the most amazing thing was walking into a packed locker room to a standing ovation of his peers. Wow. What a moment. Then in the press room, another standing ovation...and sports journalists are some of the most jaded creatures on the planet.

The man's left his mark, whether you enjoy his brand of play or not.

I wanna be like that when I grow up ;o)

Thank you again, Anna! I love the purse I'm getting! Thank you, Mel! :) Thank you everyone for the congrats!

It was awful what happened to Steve Irwin and I feel so bad for his family. He was doing important work. My son feels the same way about animals and conservation and he teaches this to his students.

    That's a wonderful prize! I love Debbie Macomber's books!

Congrats to the winners! I too was touched over the Agassi and Irwin stories. I have to admit I know less of Agassi because I am not much on tennis.

I was in tears twice - first when Agassi lost and got such a standing ovation while he wept and then hearing the terrible news about Steve Irwin. He's done so much and seemed to always be sooo excited about everything. A terrible loss.

Woo hoo! Blogger is letting me leave a comment today.

Anyway...36 I didn't realize that he was that young. It sounds kinda creepy that his professional career is ending at such a young age. I wonder what he will do now? Teach, live in decadence, become a line judge?

I'm glad you enjoy your blog. You always post happy positive stuff. It is a pleasure to read. That and I love to look at all the purses you find. Super groovy!

I like your comment about appreciating the people and places in our lives. That's such an important lesson that I try to teach my two teenagers with various degrees of success.

I have always enjoyed watching Andre Agassi's matches on tv. He is a great tennis player.
I am sad that Steve Irwin died. I enjoyed his shows. He lived life to the fullest doing what he loved. My prayers are with his family.

I never gave much thought to tennis until Andre came on the scene,he was and is so gorgeous, and he isn't just a handsom face he can play.I bet he brought the sport a lot more fans.

Steve Irwins life fits your post very well today.Anyone that knew him personally[more so]and knew him by his shows gained so much from him. His dedication, love, enthusiasm, and joy was so contagious. He was not only Australia's National treasures,he was a treasure to the world. He will be so missed,my thoughts go out to his wonderful family.I can't imagine how hard it's going to be for Terri and their kids.

Thanks Anna for your wonderful posts and prizes, your blog is always a great place to visit.

Sometimes I think we all need Clarence (from It's a Wonderful Life) to show us how much we really have touched others in our lives...it's not easy to see sometimes how much we mean to others and if we could find out what life would have been like if we hadn't been born, then maybe we would really know our self-worth.

I am not a tennis fan, but the DH is. Andre was the only one I ever really wanted to see play. I always asked him to call me so I could watch him!

It was a sad day, but at least he knew when to hang up the ol' racket. I know he will have a rich and fulfilling life no matter where fate leads him!
